November This and That

The Krispy Kreme Elf- Occasionally we will drop in at the KK on Franklin and take Coy's lab a little box of yumminess. They are always well received!
These are the goody bag for Cora's Thanksgiving party at school. I was sort of proud of how they turned out. Pretty good considering that the Santa decorations are out before Halloween. It's not easy to find turkey stuff! AND contrary to the rest of this soul food/junk food heavy post, there are oranges and goldfish crackers instead of candy in these bags.
Cora with Carson- We met Carson's parents, Stacie and Regan about 10 years ago and became very close friends instantly! For most of that time we lived very close and visited with each other what seemed like weekly! After Cora and Carson joined the picture, the visits slowed a little. We have both recently moved in opposite directions. We're now about an hour away and our visits have slowed way down. We miss them so much!

One of many pictures of Cora in her new big girl bed. She is pretty good at staying in bed. The problem is that the easiest way to get her to go to sleep is to lay in bed with her. I know that this too shall pass so I am enjoying the arm slung around my neck for now:) She has a beautiful new comforter, sheets and pillows--BUT notice the blue blanket. This is "Big". My mom made it for Coy while he was in school at UNC. Cora can't sleep at night without it. And it is indeed big! It's almost too much for her to drag from room to room. I don't know what we would do if something happened to it!

Okay, so the healthy food police (me) needs to brace for these pictures... My mom gets Cora from school on Thursdays to help me out because Coy is in class- oh, and yeah, she gets to see Cora:) We have started going to a little restaurant in Hillsborough called the Village Diner. This place is a jewel! It is set up buffet style with fried chicken, barbecue, turnip greens, hush puppies, homemade banana pudding... and fried fatback. Our girl loves crunchy fried fatback. I figure 1 time a week can't hurt, right? The organic, whole, baby food makin', no artificial anything mama in me just fainted. That's helpful because the pictures don't get much better.

This next one is of Cora showing off that she is on her second chicken leg of the evening.

Cora recently had the pleasure of roasting marshmallows. Easy to see that it was a hit. Marshmallows are totally real food right?

I can't tell if she likes them or not. Can you?

Bernie and Cheryl's Farm

We get all of our beef and some of our pork from family friends, Bernie and Cheryl Pryor. Our families have known each other forever and we took Cora out to see the animals the last time we were in town. She liked the cows but she really enjoyed seeing the baby pigs and feeding the big ones. She was not scared one bit!

Papa's Birthday

My dad turned 60 in November. These are pictures of our birthday lunch. We had such a good time. I told him that dining with two toddlers would be an adventure but he said that he was game. There were 7 of us- Daddi and Rhonda, Ivi Jo (my half sister) and her daughter, Natalie (who Cora LOVES!), Coy and Me. Ivi Jo's husband, David couldn't make it. It was fun to get together and the girls had a great time. Happy Birthday! -umm... posted a month late :)
Look! They have the same eyes! That's better! Papa with his girls. Natalie was such a ham for the camera and she flirted with Coy the whole time.

A sweet Papa Kiss

Fire Station!

During my October intersession break Cora and I took a trip to the Hillsborough Fire Station. The Station is located right downtown and she gets so excited every time she sees it. She loves to look into the big windows as we drive past to see if the are eating supper- hummm... sort of like a firefighter fishbowl. Anyhow, I thought it would be a good idea to let her meet and get comfortable around firemen. Hopefully we would never encounter one on official business. But in the case that we did, I want her to know that they are our friends.
We started with a trip to Dunkin Donuts because we didn't want to arrive empty handed. Cora was given the royal treatment by Captian Kenny (who she warmed up to immediately- very unusual for Cora). They were instant pals. It was like I wasn't even there. He led her around and put her in every truck there. There was even one truck that was used at Ground Zero. Our fire department bought it from a station in NYC. It is used to haul equipment to big disasters.
I wish I had taken my real camera instead of my iphone. The pictures aren't great but you can easily see how much fun Cora was having. I had to pull her out of some of the trucks because she didn't want to leave. I am sure we'll be making another trip soon. Thanks HFD!

Cora with Captian Kenny She insisted on wearing the seatbelt. Look at that smile!
She is so proud to be driving that ladder truck!

Cora walking down Churton after the fire station- she looks like she is really reflecting on our little field trip. Now- let's go to Tupelo's and get some lunch! Such a fun day!

Uncle Mike's Hay Ride

I have the best Uncle Mike in the world. He loves our family so much and we all adore him. He has been through such a tough year. In the first days after our Aunt Joanie passed away, we found ourselves being comforted by him. He is as genuine, kind and strong as any man I have ever known. I love him so much. I recently wrote "My Uncle Mike is the best...He took all of us on the best hay ride ever. Everyone needs an Uncle Mike like mine." on Facebook. There were a flurry of comments to follow. Here are a few-

"I love your Uncle Mike too!" -Chassidy Millsap Stanley
"He is awesome." -Jessica Ross Rash
"the sweetest nephew (sorry nephews) I have. To know Mike is to love him. I dare anyone to disagree. Mike, I love you and you know it!" -Aunt Linelle Robertson-- She said that like he is going to see it on FB. Ha! No way!
and my favorite---
"One of the best men I know... what the rest of us strive for." Robbie Rash

Now, on to the pictures...
Our family (usually 40+ people) gets together about once a month for Sunday Lunch. April and Jenny's lunch was on Halloween this year. And since you would NEVER have Halloween on Sunday in Reidsville, we were not going out to trick or treat that night. Uncle Mike decided to have a hay ride for all of us. I have been on many hay rides in my day but this was the best. We started at his house, went past the shop and pack houses, through the peach orchard, down Gilliam and High Rock, into one cow pasture, down Mom's driveway, and into another cow pasture. We ended our trip with a trip to Bill Ross' Store where he bought the whole crowd ice cream. Does it get any better?! I think not. Enjoy the many pictures that came from such a fun day!

"Morgan, I'm afraid you're not going to blend in with the cows like me."

Ryan and Ashley

Our attempt at a cousins shot... Carson, Will, Tannar, Jackson, Laurel-Ann, Morgan, Cora and John Marshall

Tannar looks like he is checking on the bulk barns as we are cruising by.
Fun!

Some of the pictures are in the wrong order. The ice cream was actually last. There are too many pictures here to rearrange.

Uncle Mike

Cora with "her people"- For several days, whenever we passed a cow pasture, she would say that those are "her people". Funny girl.

Aunt Donna and Uncle Jim- I think Jackie was too cool for this ride :)

Carson
Daniel, Misty and Laurel-Ann

John, John Marshall, and April

Anna and Morgan

Look the Witch of the West just blew in! I'm sure Uncle Mike had some thing witty to say about Jenny's costume.

Almost loaded up

Cora with Will (not entirely sure of his costume- forgive me Will)

Wild boys! Carson, Jackson, Will and Tannar. Those four heartbeats are the reason why we're having to teach our girls to be tough. They are the "Brian, Eric and Chris" of this generation.

Waiting patiently for the festivities to begin!

Another December Halloween Post. Forgive me. Our Week O Halloween Fun included a trip to the 'ville. There, the three little pumpkins (ahem... no comments here please) partied it up! I had a great time making costumes this year. I made bees, pumpkins, cows and ladybugs. Maybe I'll get started a little earlier next year. I think the pumpkins were my favorites!
Jen Jen and Irv!

No trip would be complete without a trip out to visit Papa and the animals.

Wax lips. We all love them.
